The typeface began its journey in 2019 as part of Vova Kolomeytsev’s Playftype course, but its origins reach further back—to a 2017 photograph taken at Notre-Dame de Paris. The image captured an intricately carved inscription marking the sacristy—a sacred space for storing priestly vestments. This lettering embodies the pre-Romanesque era, a time of form exploration and stylistic fluidity, where scripts were still shaping their identity, balancing between rigid geometry and organic irregularity.
The essence of this typeface lies in its historical ambiguity, reflecting a time when written forms were in flux—neither fully refined nor bound by strict typographic conventions. This fusion of ancient craftsmanship and contemporary interpretation gives the typeface a unique character, bridging the past and present through the lens of carved stone and evolving letterforms.
